This November, voters across the country will be faced with a very important decision, as election deniers and opponents of voting rights join secretary of state races across the country.
I recently co-authored an op-ed with Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s Secretary of State, outlining the threat these candidates pose. Some of these candidates have attended events held by prominent members of the QAnon movement; one candidate has even proposed a bill in the Arizona state legislature that would allow that partisan body to simply overrule a secretary of state’s decision to officially certify the results of an election.
Not many people usually pay attention to their secretary of state race or even know who serves in the role, but this year the choice on the ballot is a clear and important one. This November, voters will have to choose between truth and democracy, or autocracy and lies.
These candidates will only hold power if voters let them. This November voters can unilaterally deny these undemocratic actors access to power and influence. The first step is awareness.
