Making America Sick Again

2014TemplateHead3

13 Republican Senators spent the last couple of months secretly crafting a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Unlike the ACA, which had over 100 hearings, Republican Senate leaders plan to jam this bill though in the next few days.

Will the bill reduce premiums?  No, the Senate Republican bill will cause premiums to increase.

Will the bill lower deductibles? No, the Senate Republican bill will cause increases in deductibles and other out-of-pocket costs.

Will the bill result in more people having health insurance than do today? No, the Senate Republican bill will cause millions of Americans to lose their healthcare coverage.

Will this bill improve the health care of Americans?  No, the Senate Republican bill slashes federal funds for health care in order to fund a multi-billion tax break for the wealthiest 1% of Americans. It will harm millions of Americans, particularly children, older Americans, seniors in nursing homes, women, veterans, the disabled, those who rely upon Planned Parenthood and both low-income and middle-income families who will no longer be able to afford health care coverage.

The ACA repeal bill passed by House Republicans was terrible, but the Senate Republican proposal is even worse.  It not only repeals the ACA, it also eviscerates the federal commitment to Medicaid, a 52-year old program that 1 in every 3 Californians relies upon. Californians will lose $24 billion annually in federal assistance for their healthcare by 2027 under this bill.

The bill is opposed by the Association of American Retired Persons (AARP), the American Medical Association (AMA), American Hospital Association (AHA) and a majority of Americans.

As California’s Insurance Commissioner, I know first hand how devastating this bill will be, reversing the progress we have made in insuring 5 million Californians previously without insurance. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris are leaders in the fight to defeat this bill and we need your help.

What can you do to stop this bill?

We need to convince at least 3 Senate Republicans to refrain from voting for this bill top stop it. Contact your friends and family who live in any of the states whose Senators are listed below and ask them to contact their Senator’s office today.

Even if they’ve reached out in the past, another call or email today can really make the difference.

And next, please make a call to each of the Senators listed below and ask them to vote against this bill that would take health care away from so many of their constituents and make it less affordable for many more. (Senate email contact pages generally don’t let you submit if you’re from outside the state, so phoning is the best way to get through).
