What Matters To You?

Hi Friend,

Regardless of your political views, we can all agree on one thing; the national political discourse is completely out of touch with the pressing issues facing the Central Valley.

However captivating (or frustrating) national news can be, local decisions have a more direct impact on our day-to-day lives.

Issues like health care, jobs, education, public safety amongst others, need a deep level of understanding and can’t be summarized in a 30-second soundbite.

I would love to know which issue (or issues) you think Central Valley residents should be most concerned about during these Midterm Elections.

I invite you to submit your thoughts HERE or simply reply to this email. I promise to read each submission and comment if time allows.

In the next email, I will share a compilation of your submissions to illuminate what’s really at stake for our beloved Central Valley during this election cycle.

All the best,

Amanda Renteria

Net Neutrality: Passed

On Sunday Governor Jerry Brown signed into legislation the strongest Net Neutrality protections in the country. In today’s digital world, the internet is critical to free speech, economic justice, and the integrity of our democracy. This new law will protect Californians from Internet Service Providers who will slow down websites and create special “pay-only” fast lanes if left unchecked. I was proud to play a key role in making sure this bill arrived on the Governor’s desk safe & sound.

The Trump Administration says our concerns about Net Neutrality are “completely baseless” and immediately sued us to invalidate this important law.

I say: bring it on.

If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

Powerful special interests hate Net Neutrality, and they’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with Donald Trump in the White House, Ajit Pai in the FCC, and Jeff Sessions in the Justice Department to destroy one of the pillars of the internet California helped create: equal access.

California passed the strongest Net Neutrality protections in the nation, because we will not surrender our progress to an administration dead-set on rolling it back.

If you believe that the Internet should remain in the hands of the consumers and support Net Neutrality — make a donation today and stand with me as we take this fight to Washington.

In Solidarity,

Kevin

Incredible momentum heading into October.

TJ Cox for Congress

I wanted to take a moment to drop you a thank you note.

I don’t think I’m overstating this: if we unseat David Valadao come November — it’ll be because of your incredible support ahead of last night’s end-of-quarter deadline.

Not only did you help us record our strongest grassroots fundraising month to date, you’re also proving that grassroots donors have what it takes to go toe-to-toe with the special interests and super PACs doing everything they can to defeat us.

Now, a reality check: Voters in California receive their mail-in ballots beginning on October 8th.

That’s one week away! From here on out, this campaign will be hard at work securing these votes so we can win this race and we’ll be depending on your continued support.

Please help us get a head start on our October fundraising goal here >>

More soon,

TJ

P.S. Our campaign to unseat David Valadao will be one of the tightest in the country. Every door knocked, call made, and yes even dollar raised will make the difference in a race this close. To volunteer on our campaign, click here >>

The Trump administration just sued California

Yesterday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation that would save net neutrality in California, protecting free and open internet access.

Within hours, the Trump administration sued to block the law — and as California’s Attorney General, I’m doing everything in my power to fight back.

Can you chip in $5 right now to stand with me as we fight the Trump administration’s lawsuit against net neutrality?

Our state will not allow a handful of power brokers to dictate what information Californians can access online or the speed at which websites load.

Instead, we are committed to protecting freedom of expression, innovation and fairness.

When President Trump’s FCC decided to roll back federal net neutrality laws, we sued to defend the free and open internet. That case is still ongoing — and now, we’re going to fight the Trump administration’s new lawsuit as hard as we can.

I need you with me, MICHAEL. Contribute $5 now to defend net neutrality.

Thank you,

Xavier

Fresno Superintendent Puts Greed before Taxpayers’ Interest

FRESNO—In April 2018, Aileen Rizo won an important court battle in defense of equal pay for equal work. It all started in 2012 when Rizo, a math consultant at the Fresno County Office of Education, learned that a newly hired male coworker was five rungs higher on the pay scale than she was. Rizo had climbed that ladder for four years working with the county and yet was still getting paid far less for the exact same position and title. It wasn’t a case of someone being more qualified; Rizo had more education and seniority. However, one employee was a man and one was a woman. Rizo knew this treatment was unjust.

The Ninth Circuit Court agreed. Rizo’s employer tried to hide behind the defense that it was just playing salaries relative to what employees had earned at their previous jobs and that this form of discrimination was legal because it is based on a factor other than sex. The Ninth Circuit Court decided that even if it is not explicitly worded that way, that practice still discriminates against women. It still boiled down to unequal pay for equal work. Unequal status is easily perpetuated when employers can simply pass the blame for low pay back to previous jobs. Discriminating on past pay institutionalizes the wage gap. Rizo won her verdict, and a valuable precedent was set.

Now this victory is at risk. Jim Yovino, the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, has appealed the decision all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. To justify the appeal, Yovino has focused on one aspect of the Ninth Circuit trial. There, one of the 11 judges presiding over the case died after the arguments had been made and his vote on the case had been recorded before the verdict was officially gaveled in. This was unusual enough to enable Yovino to push forward this case after Rizo’s victory.

This appeal matters both to Fresno County and the entire country. In addition to the incredible importance of pay equity to all workers, the appeal is costly to Fresno taxpayers. Supreme Court cases are long and labor intensive. The county is paying to try and give employers the ability to discriminate against the people that they hire. Yovino, an elected official as Fresno County superintendent, is trying to ensure that employers everywhere can pay two people of the exact same ability doing the exact same work two different rates. This is an issue beyond political parties. It is simply a matter of fundamental rights.

“Aileen Rizo’s victory for equity pay is a positive development for everyone in our society—especially women,” says Michael D. Evans, chair of the Fresno County Democratic Party. “In challenging the court’s decision, Yovino’s priorities are severely misplaced. We should support pay equity and use our tax dollars to better our communities, not line the pockets of greedy attorneys looking to screw our neighbors out of a fair wage.”

Rizo is now running against Republican Jim Patterson for State Assembly. She has not given up fighting against unjust treatment. It is uncertain when she will be in front of the Supreme Court to state her case, but she will be on the ballot Nov. 6 pledging to fight for the rest of us.

Nunes Iowa Family Farm Exposed

Nunes Iowa Family Farm Exposed

Fresno, CA (October 1st, 2018) – Devin Nunes and his relatives secretly moved their family farm from California to Iowa a decade ago and they now likely employ undocumented workers. Extensive reporting from Esquire magazine details that the farm Devin Nunes touts constantly was actually sold in 2006. The reporting exposes the  hypocrisy of the Nunes owned dairy farm that is working hard to protect their brother’s reelection chances and most likely profiting off of undocumented labor. Andrew Janz released the following statement in reaction to that story:

“It is disgusting that Devin Nunes has been lying for years about his family farm, pretending he is one of us. Devin has shown once again that he’s left the Valley and the values we hold dear behind just to make a profit. His family moving their farm to Iowa and lying to Californians to protect Devin’s political career is just the latest and most heinous example. We deserve better.”

Read the full account from Ryan Lizza here, https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a23471864/devin-nunes-family-farm-iowa-california/.

Andrew Janz was raised in Visalia and is running for Congress against Devin Nunes in California’s 22nd Congressional District. Andrew’s campaigning on water for the valley, more jobs, social security and medicaid, and fighting corruption in Washington. Did you catch this note?

Friends,

In a moment, I’m going to ask you to make a donation to TJ Cox’s campaign to flip California’s 21st district. But first, let me explain why it’s so important that we all come together to make sure TJ gets elected.

TJ’s not even in Congress yet and he’s already been delivering positive outcomes for our Central Valley communities.

Thanks to his work as a community development leader, tens of thousands in the Central Valley have access to health care, job training, and better career opportunities. Now, he’s running for Congress to make sure our government does right for working families and to ensure his community has a voice in Congress.

While Cox worked to help build health clinics across the Central Valley, his opponent David Valadao was in Washington voting with Donald Trump 99% of the time — including a vote he took to strip away health care insurance from thousands of hard-working families in this district.

We have a chance to send TJ Cox to Congress with your support. Your contribution of just $10 or more will go a long way in putting TJ on a path to victory

If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

Thanks for everything,

Kamala Harris
US Senator, California

Hope to see you at the Big Fresno Fair!

Dear Friends,

One of my favorite activities in the Valley is attending the fairs and festivals hosted throughout our cities and counties. These events offer us the opportunity to interact with each other, share our diverse backgrounds, and enjoy quality time with our families. Not to mention the delicious food; nothing is better than a corn dog and a nice cold lemonade on a hot night in the Valley!

This summer, I enjoyed talking to voters, eating good food, and seeing folks from all over our community at the Kings and Tulare County Fairs. I even got the chance to watch a kids dance competition at the Kern County Fair!

I’m excited to go to the Big Fresno Fair which opens this week. I hope you’ll join me at the Fresno County Democratic Party booth at the Big Fresno Fair on the evenings of Friday, October 5th, and Friday, October 12th!

Hope to see you there!

Thank you, MICHAEL

Thank you.

I know that you’ve gotten a lot of emails from me lately, but I want to thank you for the incredible support you’ve given me these last months.

Thank you for standing with me to safeguard women’s rights, protect hardworking immigrant families, save affordable health care and defend our families and our values against the worst impulses of the Trump administration.

We’re fighting — and winning — but our work is far from over. Contribute $5 to help me keep challenging the Trump administration.

As long as I’m here, I’ll never stop fighting for California.

But my GOP opponent doesn’t feel the same way. On immigrant rights, on health care access, and on so much more, he’d be content to let the Trump administration trample on our communities unchecked. We can’t let that happen.

Pitch in $5 right now to keep me in office this November.

Thank you,

Xavier

With you on my side, I won’t back down, MICHAEL

This is a moment that requires action.

Every day, it seems the Trump Administration finds new ways to attack women’s rights, threaten the environment, gut access to affordable health care, and tear families apart.

But as Attorney General, I’m not just condemning this administration — I’m fighting back in court and delivering real results to stop President Trump’s worst policies.

Contribute $5 now to help me contribute standing up to President Trump.

As long as I’m in office, I’ll keep fighting for our families, our values, and the GOP knows that.

They’re marshalling every resource they can to defeat me in November, but with you on my side, I won’t back down.

Thank you so much for standing with me,

Brett Kavanaugh

After watching Republican senators’ shameful performance during this week’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, it is a moral imperative for Democrats to take back control of Congress this November.

Democrats/Join us.

After watching Republican senators’ shameful performance in this week’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, I’m more certain than ever that it is a moral imperative for Democrats to take back control of Congress this November and the White House in 2020.

Chuck Grassley shouldn’t be chairing a congressional committee. People like Lindsey Graham shouldn’t be Senators. People like Donald Trump shouldn’t be appointing anyone to a lifetime term on our nation’s highest court., Lindsey Graham and their Republican colleagues have shown that they have no interest in seriously investigating the sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh — and Donald Trump has demonstrated time and again that he lacks the temperament and judgment to make an appointment to our highest court.

My promise to you as CEO of the Democratic National Committee is that I will do every last thing in my power in the next 39 days to fight back against these Republicans. Right now, I’d like to ask for your help.

This Sunday is the final end-of-quarter deadline before Election Day, and every contribution made before Sunday at midnight will help Democrats take back Congress this November. If we do that, we can exert some real checks on this president and stop him from pushing through more extreme Supreme Court nominees.

Taking action now is the only way we’ll be able to make our elected officials represent our values.

Thank you.
