In Defense of Government

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Delaine Eastin for Governor 2018

Former Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. once said, “Taxes are what we pay for civilized society.”

As an Assemblywoman, I once had a bill vetoed by Republican Governor George Deukmejian. In his veto, the Governor said that while the author had a noble purpose, to increase funding for school libraries, my bill needed to identify a revenue stream, e.g, taxes, to pay for this ‘noble purpose.’

In other words, our Republican Governor wasn’t opposed to increased taxes to pay for government services, he was opposed to a plan that didn’t identify a funding stream! This was once the definition of a Conservative. Unfortunately, since that time, there has been a decades long effort by the Top .1% to attack the very foundations of our civilized society.

Right now, we have near full employment and corporate earnings are at a record high. Most economists suggest that it is the perfect time to raise taxes to invest more in education, in our aging and outdated infrastructure, and to reduce the federal debt. Instead, one of the most irresponsible federal tax bills in history is likely to be signed into law by the end of the year.

Make no mistake, this bill is a massive transfer of wealth from the poor, working and middle classes to the very wealthiest amongst us.

It is time for the people to join together in defense of government and our collective rights to quality education, a clean environment, safe bridges, dams, and roads, healthcare, mass transportation, affordable housing, and the right to a dignified retirement.

The threat to our civil society is severe, but I believe in us. Budgets are statements of values, and as California’s governor, I will create a budget that is of, by and for the people and not the powerful.

Please contribute here today to help me become governor and take on this irresponsible administration and work to keep more of our tax dollars in state. If you are connected on ActBlue click below for an instant contribution:

New Year’s Resolution

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Alex Padilla

Today, twelve of the fourteen House Republicans from California knowingly voted to sabotage the financial security and health care of millions of Americans in order to hand permanent corporate tax breaks and giant tax cuts for the most wealthy.

It’s time for our first New Year’s Resolution. In 2018, let’s make sure that California voters hold their representatives accountable for their vote on this tax scam.

Add your name now to pledge that in 2018, we’ll fight to elect Representatives to Congress that work for all of us, not just their donors.

These California Republicans blatantly and shamelessly prioritized tax breaks for corporations and the most wealthy over the healthcare and economic security of their constituents.

Californians stand to be hurt even more by this scam. California homeowners will be hit hard with the immediate and devastating provisions of this bill, making it harder for hardworking families to make ends meet. That is unacceptable.

Throughout 2017, we’ve seen our resistance prevail in so many state elections. Let’s make sure we continue the momentum in 2018, as we hold every lawmaker accountable who voted for this tax scam.

Add your name now. Resolve in the New Year to hold our representatives accountable by pledging to vote in 2018.

Can You Help?

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

n less than two weeks, my campaign for Attorney General faces a critical fundraising deadline, and I need your help. Can you make a year-end contribution of $250, $100, $50, or $25 to my campaign?

I’ve been campaigning throughout the state since the end of 2015. I have been overwhelmed by the support we are receiving. In the last couple of weeks alone, the California Federation of Teachers and the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley joined our long list of supporters.

These grassroots organizations and so many others have joined our campaign because I have the experience and the progressive vision to serve as Attorney General. As a special assistant to Attorney General Janet Reno, I learned first-hand how to run a Department of Justice. As a legal-aid lawyer, I fought for justice for farmworkers and other lower income Californians. As Insurance Commissioner, I’ve led a law enforcement and consumer protection agency that has held CEOs and public officials accountable for corruption and fraud, and saved consumers billions of dollars.

As your next Attorney General, I will put our progressive values to work to address a myriad of challenges, including criminal justice reform, fighting climate change, and boldly opposing the Trump administration.

We know we can win this campaign, but only with your help. Please click here to make your contribution today.

In friendship,

California Insurance Commissioner and Candidate for Attorney General

Endorsement From the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters Bolsters State Senator Ed Hernandez’ Statewide Bid

WEST COVINA, CA- Continuing his cascade of support from organizations representing working families, today State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez was endorsed by the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters in his campaign for California Lieutenant Governor.

In announcing their endorsement, Dan Langford, President of the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters, released the following statement:

“The Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters proudly endorses Senator Ed Hernandez because working people need a proven advocate for workers’ rights in the Lieutenant Governor’s office. We also need a person who can be an advocate for California businesses to help our economy grow and create new jobs. Senator Ed Hernandez will fight for California workers and California businesses and will push back against large, out of state and foreign corporations who try to drive out local businesses,  depress wages for local California workers and sometimes avoid paying taxes, hurting workers and legitimate local businesses who play by the rules. . He will fight to make sure that California young people are given opportunities to be trained in the  construction field while earning academic credit from our community colleges. As a State Senator Ed Hernandez fought to ensure California has an educated workforce ready to fill 21st century jobs. We are confident that Senator Hernandez will continue fighting for California workers and businesses as our next Lieutenant Governor.”

Yesterday, State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez rolled out a new digital video ad, titled “Proven Progressive,” in his campaign for California Lieutenant Governor. The ad highlights some of the Senator’s high-powered endorsements, including from the California Nurses Association and the California Teachers Association, along with his 100% legislative voting scorecard from organizations like the California Labor Federation* and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California Advocates*.

To view Senator Hernandez’ video ad, “Proven Progressive,” click on the screen below or here.

The script of the spot reads as follows:

Ed Hernandez:

A proven progressive.

He’s endorsed by the California Nurses Association because, “he’s led on healthcare issues,” including “single-payer.”

Planned Parenthood and California’s Labor Federation gave him a 100% scorecard.

And the California Teachers Association said he’s “our choice.”

As Senator, Hernandez took on Big Oil, Wall Street banks and Big Pharma.

He fought for tougher environmental laws, consumer protections, lower drug prices and livable wages for working families.

Ed Hernandez: A Proven Progressive.

Beyond endorsements highlighted in the video, “Proven Progressive,” Hernandez has earned widespread support from organizations that represent working families, including from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California State Council, the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California and over 60 labor unions overall. He’s also collected wide-ranging support from grassroots activists and more.
Significantly, recently California Governor Jerry Brown signed Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez’ groundbreaking drug transparency bill, SB-17, into law.  Senator Hernandez’ latest digital video ad, titled, “Life or Death,” features a moving testimonial from Kendall Renee, who is allergic to more than 95% of foods and carries at least four EpiPens with her at all times. Renee highlights Senator Hernandez’ efforts to combat skyrocketing drug costs in the ad.

Beyond today’s announcement, Senator Dr. Hernandez’ campaign has released an expansive list of over 500 endorsements from grassroots activists, community leaders, federal, state and local elected officials, public safety groups and over 60 organizations that represent working families.

A husband, father, grandfather, practicing optometrist, and local businessman, “Dr. Ed” (as he is known to his patients) has spent his life bringing quality eye care to predominantly low-income communities.  As a health care provider, the need to improve access to health care for all Californians is what first drove him to run for office.

Since being elected to the Assembly in 2006 and the Senate in 2010, Dr. Ed Hernandez has been a leader on the implementation of federal health care reform – helping expand access to affordable health care, control costs, and improve the network of providers so people can actually get quality care when they need it. Dr. Ed has been a champion by expanding educational opportunity to qualified students overlooked by our public schools and universities, as well as a major proponent for government reform, including fixing a broken initiative system too often hijacked by billionaires and wealthy corporations. Dr. Ed Hernandez is running to take this experience, leadership, and vision to the next level by serving the people of California as their Lieutenant Governor.

Voting Rights at risk

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

Alex Padilla

Thanks to our continued resistance, Trump’s sham voter fraud commission has stalled, at least for now.

The commission hasn’t met since September, but we know commission members are still pushing their false narrative of widespread voter fraud and conspiring to suppress the vote.

They’re still a very real threat to every voter and to our collective voting rights. We need to keep up the pressure.

Don’t let Trump and Kobach, get away with colluding to undermine our voting rights. Sign our petition now to recommit to our fight for our right to vote.

We know the commission’s true intent: its mission is to disenfranchise voters, mainly minorities, young people, and lower income voters. The commission is determined and will do anything to get their way.

From the beginning, I stood up against this commission when they demanded the personal information of all voters in California. I will always put the privacy and the rights of California voters first.

I need you to stand with me to stop voter suppression.

Add your name now to join the fight.

Thank you for standing with me,

Alex Padilla

California Secretary of State
