Don’t Lose Sight of the Target

The Fresno County Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

DON’T LOSE SIGHT OF THE TARGET

In this Democratic Party election we cannot lose sight of our goals. One of our primary goals must be to take back the House to deprive Trump of the rubber stamps he needs to advance his tax cuts for the rich agenda.  Democratic Clubs that had dwindled in membership, now have thousands of new members anxious to contribute to the resistance to the Trump agenda.  We cannot squander this opportunity by treating this election as a proxy fight between Hillary and Bernie supporters. Rather, it is our Party’s chance to welcome this new energy, to embrace young activists delegates, and to mentor and guide their progressive agenda.  We must focus our collective energy on our goal of resistance to the Trump agenda by defeating the Congressmen that carry Trump’s water.

I promise to bring a culture of hard work that works hand in hand with all people.   In 2016, I registered 4000 high school students in various counties: rural and urban. And in the past three years, I registered many thousands more high school students. These students will be a tsunami in 2018 and 2020.  In Yolo County, Congressman John Garamendi , who is perennially challenged, tripled his electoral margin over his Republican challenger. When I received the John Burton Award for Innovative Volunteer of the Year, I was the top phone banker in the Democratic Party.  I brought in volunteers to my home in Sacramento to make 14000 calls for races in Los Angeles, Fresno, and San Diego.  I made 3000 of these calls myself.

We need to go after swing Congressional Districts that the Republicans have held for the last three consecutive elections since 2010: the 21st, 10th, 49th, and 39th.  All have a CPVI (Cooks Partisan Voting Index) of five or less.

CD 21 held by (R) David Valadeo has a CPVI score of D+2.  This score means that in the last two presidential elections, CD 21 voted Democratic at a rate that was 2% above the national average.  In 2018, the fate of Congressmen will be tied to the popularity of Donald Trump whose  approval rating has plummeted from 48 % in February 2017 to 34% in March 2017. Trumpcare threatens to take coverage from 24 million people.  You can bet that the Republican Congress will return to healthcare.

Now, voters in Hanford, Valadao’s district, are asking Valadao to vote against repealing Obamacare.  110,000 people in CD 21  benefit from Obamacare, 99,000 of them from Medicare expansion.  Valadao is out of step with his district.  That is why I travelled 200 miles to Hanford to walk precincts for Emilio Huerta. The same vulnerability is true for Congressman Denham in the CD 10 which has a score of R+1, and Congressman Darryl Issa in CD 49 that has a CPVI score of R+4, and Congressman Ed Royce of Fullerton which has a CPVI score of R+5.  Our party needs to fight for these districts everyday in every way for the next two years. We can flip these Congressional Districts in 2018.  Do not lose sight of the prize.  Click here to go to Norma Alcala’s website
