I sent my lawyer

*** No candidate for Governor has been endorsed by the CDP ***

Delaine Eastin for Governor 2018

I was elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction the same year that the anti-immigrant Prop 187 was passed by the voters of California. That year, the Republicans managed to take over the State Assembly.

I was one of only three (out of eight) elected Democratic state office holders. Governor Wilson threatened to have me recalled if I didn’t enforce Prop 187 by ordering teachers to do background checks on their students and report them to Immigration.

I refused the governor’s order, and I told him I would see him in court. I sent my department’s lawyer to argue against the Assistant State Attorney General over the constitutionality of Prop 187. We won. Prop 187 was declared unconstitutional.

Two years later, Democrats took back the State Assembly and we have not looked back.

As governor, I will not waste your precious tax dollars to deploy California’s National Guard to “guard” the border against imagined threats.

We are not going to demonize our immigrants who contribute so much to California and are one of the reasons we are the 6th largest economy in the world.

We are going to stand together and invest in our children and families because a people, united, will never be defeated. Share this email here.

In solidarity,

CDP Weekly Update

Weekly Update – April 06, 2018

It’s been another productive week for the CDP. See below for a recap of this week’s activities.

Dr. King

This week, we commemorated the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We sent out a message on behalf of the entire CDP team expressing our thoughts on this poignant milestone, including the following:

“He believed in an America where we end poverty for all. He believed in an America where every person is guaranteed quality healthcare, exceptional education, dignified work and a dignified retirement.  He believed in an America that uses our influence and wealth to spread peace and justice here at home, and around the world.

And he believed in an America where Black Men and Black Women and all People of Color are respected and valued as proud, patriotic and equal citizens of a just and peaceful nation, free of the disparities in healthcare, education, wealth and justice that continue to fester and poison us. He believed in an America that truly embodies the values of equality, inclusion and opportunity; a country where the lives of innocent people like Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin and Stephon Clark are never taken because the rights to life and liberty are absolute, and are protected for everyone universally.”

You can read the full message here.

Congratulations Sydney Kamlager!

CDP-Endorsed Assembly candidate Sydney Kamlager triumphed in this week’s special election to fill the vacancy in Assembly District 54.

Her election with nearly 70 percent of the vote means she’ll be sworn in as an Assemblymember very shortly, and at this crucial and poignant moment in our history, our entire state will benefit from having a strong, dynamic and effective woman of color with a seat at the table.

We also want to congratulate Luz Rivas and Jesse Gabriel for coming in first place in their contests in AD 39 and AD 45. They will now advance to the Special General Election in June as our endorsed candidates.

You can read Chair Baumans full statement on the Primary results here but one thing is clear: the Big Blue Wave is being formed in California.

And while we’re on the subject of congratulations… CDP Vice Chair Daraka Larimore-Hall is receiving the Selma Rubin Democratic Leadership Award at the Democratic Party of Santa Barbara County’s 10th Annual Roosevelt-Hamer Dinner!

The dinner will be on Saturday, April 21 at 6:00 PM at the Historic Carillo Ballroom in Santa Barbara. The program will also feature Assemblymember Tony Thurmond, our CDP-Endorsed candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction, as well as Vice Chair Larimore-Hall’s co-honorees, Ethan Bertrand, Paula Perotte and the Central Coast Labor Council.

Everybody loves a weekend in Santa Barbara – purchase your tickets to the dinner here.

And congratulations Vice Chair Larimore-Hall!

For Real Tho… Everyone Loves Santa Barbara

Each year, a select group of students from Santa Barbara City College participate in a one-week immersive internship program, where they get first-hand experience with what it’s like to work in the various staffer jobs in the Capitol. As part of this year’s experience, the students also toured Your CDP Headquarters and met with senior staff from the CDP.

(They also met with our counterparts at the California Republican Party. We offered our sympathies and our white sage for anyone who needed to cleanse the negative energy.)

The students learned about the Party’s structure at the local, state and federal level from Clark Lee and Emma Harper. Tina McKinnor gave an overview of the day to day challenges of running a party as unique and complex as the CDP, and John Vigna talked about the various messages and mechanisms the Party uses to build a relationship with our voters.

It was a fun and candid exchange with some bright and insightful students. Your CDP Team is always happy to make time to meet with student groups and talk to them about our Party and the values that make us Democrats. As always, you can e-mail CDP Operations Director Tina McKinnor to schedule tours, and to reserve the CDP HQ for receptions, conferences and more.

213 days until the Election!

We won’t stand for this

*** No candidate for U.S. Senate has been endorsed by the CDP ***

Illegal border crossings in the US are at their lowest levels since 1971. We must keep our country safe, but border patrol agents are more than prepared for the ebb and flow of border crossings.

So why is Trump requesting that National Guard units be sent to the border while he waits for his racist sham of a wall to be built?

The same reason his Justice Department is suing California over legislation we passed to protect immigrants: to use racism and xenophobia to divide us, incite fears, and stoke tensions with Mexico.

Here’s how we fight back: Pooling our collective voices and power together, demanding accountability, and demanding that states across the country rise to the challenge.

Your voices can help provide the support states need to reject Trump’s request, and keep their National Guard units at the ready for real threats, not Trump’s political ploys.

Add your name today to tell Trump that we won’t stand for a militarized border with Mexico >>

All my life, as a kid growing up in poverty in a border town, as a community organizer, and as a legislator, I’ve seen first-hand the contributions of the undocumented community to California’s culture and economy.

I know that tearing families apart is bad for business, not just our global image.

And I know that militarizing our border with Mexico is the act of a desperate president, eager to appease his extreme right-wing base at any cost to our nation.

California needs a leader in the Senate to take these fights head on and win. Nothing less than the future of our state and country is at stake. That’s why I’m running.

Please take action now and send a message that a militarized border is unacceptable.

We’ll defeat this together,

Trump is the Fraud

*** Alex Padilla has been endorsed for Secretary of State by the CDP ***Alex Padilla

During an event in Virginia yesterday, Trump said,

“In many places, like California, the same person votes many times. You probably heard about that. They always like to say ‘oh that’s a conspiracy theory.’ Not a conspiracy theory, folks. Millions and millions of people.”

Not true.

The real fraud is the occupant of the Oval Office.

Trump continues to spew his same old lies about “millions of illegal voters” in California.

Trump’s dishonesty and baseless rants about “widespread” voter fraud dishonor local elections officials and the thousands of volunteers who work hard and give of their time to administer our elections with integrity.

I spoke with CBS LA to counter Trump’s allegations of widespread voter fraud and point out how they undermine confidence in our elections. Watch the segment here.

We can not and will not let Trump’s lies go unanswered. And we will not let Trump’s attacks slow down our mission to secure our elections and defend our democracy.

Please support my ongoing efforts to resist Trump’s attacks and improve elections in California by making a $20 contribution today.  Together we can protect California from Trump’s efforts to erode our democracy.

Thank you,

Alex Padilla

California Secretary of State

UPDATE: Big endorsement!

*** TJ Cox has been endorsed for CD-21 by the CDP ***

TJ Cox for Congress

Big news.

I am so happy to announce that we’ve received the endorsement of End Citizens United — the national grassroots organization working to reform our broken campaign finance system.

Just like you, I’m frustrated and disgusted by the big money interests that have taken over our political system. These interests spent a billion dollars electing Donald Trump. What did they get in return? A trillion-and-a-half-dollar tax cut. That’s a 150,000 percent return on their money! It’s outrageous. Now the GOP wants to “pay” for their tax cuts by slashing Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and all of our social safety nets.

It’s not enough to commit to reforming the system — we must lead by example right now. That’s why I’ve pledged to reject all corporate PAC money to this campaign.

Can you chip in a donation to help me prove that our grassroots network has what it takes to take on the special interests in Washington?

Endorsed by ECU!

I’m running to be your voice in Washington so we can fight for the things we care about and need — from affordable health care access to improving the education system and bringing good paying jobs to our local economy.

I’m depending on small-dollar, grassroots donations to get there. Please help me run a strong, local campaign that’s fueled by the grassroots, Michael.

Trump v CA: NYT Spotlights Our Fight for Our Values

*** No candidate for Attorney General has been endorsed by the CDP ***

As the Trump Administration continues to attack California’s values, I’ve stood ready to defend fairness and opportunity. Today, the New York Times profiled several of the legal challenges we’ve undertaken to protect our way of life. I invite you to read it here.

Whether protecting our public lands, public safety, Dreamers, federal funding, or our environment, we don’t go looking for a fight, but we will continue to stand up – and win – for all Californians.

I hope you’ll continue to support our efforts by joining my campaign to remain your Attorney General.

A day in the life on the campaign trail

*** No candidate for Governor has been endorsed by the CDP ***

We’re working hard to earn every vote, and it’s a family effort! Here are some of the realities of a campaign:

6am Alarm: fixed kids’ lunch, left thank you note for husband, and kissed sleepy kids as I ran out the door.

– On drive to LA: multiple calls, policy reads, Twitter check-ins, and stops for gas.

– Meetings: listening to what we need in our state, hearing the angst in our communities and inspiring leaders to think differently. Challenging us all to be compassionate, future-oriented, and hopeful.

– Return drive: tired, but decided to get back (a preferred choice because I get to see the kids).

– At midnight: Walk in the door, on the table, poems, pictures, and presents!

Can you help us keep the momentum going? Donate today to support our movement. Thank you!

Best wishes,
