The Fresno For Bernie activities have started to reflect the surge of the national Bernie Sanders for President campaign. Nearly 20 new supporters joined our campaign at the Labor Day Breakfast last week, and our Facebook group has grown to 377 at press time.

The Steering Group of local progressives started in June by Bev Fitzpatrick, Dee Barnes and Yezdyar Kaoosji now includes Nancy Griesser, Bob Jones, Simone Cranston-Rhodes, Abel Para, Chip Ashley, Ellie Garabedian, Rod Sanderson, Larry Johnson, Mike Wells, Mary Zuccaro, Sonny Karlyle, Hopita Valdez, Anna Wells, Yamina Grace, Daniel O’Connell and the list keeps growing at every meeting.

Last week we published a “tool kit” to help Bernie supporters launch their own Get Out The Word (GOTW) activities among family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. While community gatherings are not currently planned, the next live Bernie Sanders streaming event will be locally hosted when scheduled.

At this time we are inviting volunteers to join in tabling events at the Clovis Fest Democratic Club Booth on Sept. 19, the CVPPAC Dolores Huerta event on Sept. 27 and the Fresno Democratic Party Booth at the Big Fresno Fair on Friday, Oct. 16. Anyone interested in these events may contact Chip Ashley by emailing

At this stage of the campaign, ten months before the California Primary we will remain an informal group and we will not be raising campaign funds. Everyone wishing to donate to the Bernie Sanders campaign or purchase official campaign promotional materials may do so via the official website. Locally the Democratic Party office has Bernie Buttons and Bumper Stickers available for sale.

The Bernie Movement depends on passionate volunteers. Bernie does not have a huge paid staff contingent across the nation directing volunteer activity. This remains a grass roots driven campaign, and our objectives is to support volunteers to Get Out The Word (GOTW) by providing relevant information and support in these five areas:

  • EVENTS: Provide volunteers with information about local and national events as well as advice and resources for tabling, hosting local events, such as flyers, check-lists, sign-up forms, etc. Events Contact: Chip Ashley (
  • COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Track opportunities for joining community celebration rallies, walking and waving with banners and signs at high traffic locations and in all neighborhoods.Community Outreach Contact: Dee Barnes (
  • PRECINCT OUTREACH: Train and plan Precinct Outreach Walks in neighborhoods. Precinct Outreach Contact: Simone Cranston-Rhodes (
  • SOCIAL MEDIA/MEDIA: Plan and post information on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social Media/Media Contact: Carlos Diaz (
  • SPEAKERS BUREAU: Train and schedule volunteers to make presentations about the Bernie Sanders Campaign at political and social clubs and groups. Speakers Bureau Contact: Yezdyar Kaoosji (

To join any of the above teams please email the contact person. The teams will meet as necessary to function effectively.

From the Chair: Winning in 2016 Begins in 2015

Michael D. Evans Chair, Fresno County Democratic Party

Michael D. Evans
Chair, Fresno County Democratic Party

From Fresno County Democratic Chair Michael D. Evans:

Now is the time for us to undertake the serious work in terms of voter registration and voter education to ensure that we have laid the groundwork for strong turnout to support our Democratic candidates in 2016. We would greatly appreciate your input and assistance in that endeavor.

Our precinct leader program is under way, and this initiative provides an excellent opportunity for persons to make a difference in their own neighborhood. This program has shown proven results, and the more precinct leaders we can engage in 2016, the greater our likelihood of success.

Also, consider running for office yourself. Many down-ballot races will be on next year’s ballot, for school boards and a variety of special districts. Research the bodies that appeal to your area of interest.

Precinct Leaders needed

What happens in 2015, a year with almost no elections in our county? It’s an opportune time for us to address the voter turnout problem that has plagued our region in the past few election cycles. Participating in our precinct leader program is one way to help solve this problem.

Become a precinct leader today. You will be trained and given all the materials that you need to connect with your neighbors in a positive way about our local political issues and candidates. Studies have shown that such personal engagement has a significant positive effect on turnout.

Contact 559-495-0606 or to learn more.
